Exploring the Map
When you open the map there are two ways to display information:
- By clicking on the gray Activity Category tabs located at the top of the map you will see new icons of interest appear in the Features sidebar.
- By switching the icon types in the Features sidebar on and off (see blue tab on right), you can access more information or remove it to simplify the map. You can also use the Features sidebar to learn what the icons mean.
Click on any icon to access a pop-up box with a link that takes you to more detailed information. Try using the right-click button on these links and opening them in a new tab or window if you would like to preserve your map view.
Activity Categories, described below, make unique information available to you. Each Activity Category also includes additional information uploaded by other community users.
- Paddle: river access points, water trails, river gauges, hazards, outfitters, supplies and camping
- Explore: points of historic and cultural interest, public lands, state and local parks
- Fish: types of fish in river segments, river access information, fishing piers
- Hike/Bike: walking and cycling trail locations along the James
- Boat: boat ramps, marinas, points of interest, lodging, and restaurants
- Save the River: locations of sewage treatment plants, industrial points of pollution, rain gardens, river cleanups, and restoration projects
You can create a custom map by zooming in, turning on just the right set of icons, and then click the blue “Permalink” at the right-hand bottom of the map. A special web address will appear in your browser window that can be copied and pasted, saved or sent to friends. This web address will take anyone to your custom map.
Below the map you will see photos from recently uploaded points from users like you. Be sure to take advantage of the Facebook and Twitter links included below the map to keep up to date on James River Association news and upcoming events.
